Cover photo

A cover photo is the large banner image displayed across the top of a social media profile or page, separate from the smaller profile picture, used to signal branding or context at a glance.

Quick facts

  • Also known as: banner image, header image, profile banner
  • Category: Content formats
  • Applies to: X · Facebook · LinkedIn · YouTube (Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest have no traditional profile cover photo)
  • Key sizes: Facebook 851×315px · LinkedIn personal 1584×396px · X header 1500×500px · YouTube channel art 2048×1152px (safe area 1546×423px)

What is a cover photo on social media?

A cover photo sits behind or above the profile picture as a wide banner, giving a profile more visual real estate than a small avatar allows. It's commonly used for branding (a logo lockup or tagline), seasonal promotion, or simply a striking image that sets tone before a visitor scrolls further. Not every platform has one: Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest profiles rely on the profile picture and bio alone, with no dedicated banner slot, which is a common source of confusion for anyone who designed a banner expecting to use it everywhere.

Facebook: Cover photo displays at 851×315px on desktop (SocialPilot, social media image sizes). The mobile crop is narrower than the desktop crop, so text or logos placed near the left and right edges on desktop can be cut off entirely on a phone.

LinkedIn: Personal profile banner is 1584×396px; a Company Page cover is a much shorter 1128×191px, a ratio worth double-checking before reusing a personal-profile banner on a Page.

X: Profile header displays at 1500×500px, a 3:1 ratio, and sits directly above the profile picture, which overlaps the bottom-left corner of the banner on most layouts, worth keeping clear of key text.

YouTube: Channel art uses a 2048×1152px canvas, but only the center 1546×423px "safe area" is guaranteed to show across TV, desktop, and mobile; anything important placed outside that safe zone risks being cropped depending on the device.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram have a cover photo? No. Instagram profiles show only a circular profile picture and bio; there's no separate banner image slot on the main profile. Highlight covers exist but serve a different purpose, thumbnails for saved Story collections, not a profile banner.

What happens if my cover photo is the wrong size? The platform crops it to fit the display area, which can cut off text, logos, or faces positioned near the edges. Keeping key elements inside each platform's safe area avoids awkward cropping, particularly on YouTube where the safe zone is much smaller than the full canvas.

Can I use the same cover photo on every platform? Not directly. Each platform uses a different aspect ratio, from LinkedIn's very wide, short personal banner to YouTube's tall canvas with a narrow safe area, so a single image usually needs to be resized or recomposed per platform rather than uploaded as-is.
