CPM (cost per mille)

CPM (cost per mille, from the Latin for thousand) is the price an advertiser pays for every 1,000 impressions an ad receives, regardless of how many clicks or conversions it generates.

Quick facts

  • Also known as: cost per thousand, cost per 1,000 impressions
  • Category: Advertising & monetization
  • Applies to: X · Instagram · Facebook · LinkedIn · TikTok · Pinterest
  • Formula: CPM = (Total ad spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000
  • 2026 average CPM by platform: Instagram $9.46 · Facebook $8-9 · LinkedIn $6-9 · X $5-7 · TikTok $4-7 · YouTube $4-5 · Pinterest $4.67 (Hootsuite, social media advertising costs 2026)

What is CPM on social media?

CPM is a pricing model based purely on visibility, an advertiser pays for reach, not for the outcome of that reach. It's the metric that determines how much it costs to put an ad in front of an audience regardless of whether anyone clicks, which makes it most relevant for brand-awareness campaigns rather than direct response campaigns, where cost per click (CPC) or cost per acquisition (CPA) matter more since they're tied to an action. Advertisers still buy on a reach-based metric like CPM even in a click-driven industry because awareness and brand lift are real, measurable effects that don't require a click to happen, someone can be influenced by seeing an ad repeatedly without ever clicking it once.

Because CPM only guarantees an impression was served, not that a human actually saw it, the ad industry relies on a viewability standard set by the Media Rating Council: an impression only counts as "viewable" once at least 50% of an ad's pixels are on screen for a minimum of one continuous second for display ads, or two seconds for video ads. Reputable ad platforms report viewability alongside raw impressions so advertisers can judge whether their CPM spend is actually reaching real attention.

How is CPM calculated?

CPM is total spend divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000: a $50 budget that generates 10,000 impressions has a $5 CPM. Rates vary significantly by platform because of differences in ad inventory, audience targeting precision, and competition for placements. Based on 2026 data, average CPM runs from roughly $4 on TikTok and YouTube up to over $9 on Instagram, with LinkedIn's B2B targeting capability pushing its CPM higher than more broadly-targeted consumer platforms despite lower raw reach (Hootsuite, social media advertising costs 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Is a lower CPM always better? Not necessarily. A lower CPM means cheaper reach, but if that reach doesn't convert, cost per acquisition can still end up higher than on a pricier platform with better-targeted, higher-intent impressions.

What's the difference between CPM and CPC? CPM charges for every 1,000 impressions regardless of clicks. CPC (cost per click) only charges when someone actually clicks the ad, which shifts more of the cost risk from the advertiser to the platform.

Why is LinkedIn's CPM higher than TikTok's? LinkedIn's audience is professionally targeted by job title, industry, and seniority, which commands a premium for B2B advertisers even though LinkedIn's overall reach is smaller than TikTok's.

What counts as a "viewable" impression? Under the Media Rating Council's industry standard, an impression counts as viewable once at least 50% of the ad is on screen for one continuous second (display) or two seconds (video), a check meant to weed out impressions technically served but never actually seen.
