Click-through rate (CTR)

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who click a link, ad, or post after seeing it, calculated by dividing total clicks by total impressions.

Quick facts

  • Also known as: CTR
  • Category: Metrics & analytics
  • Applies to: X · Instagram · Facebook · LinkedIn · TikTok
  • Formula: CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100
  • Average paid CTR (Q4 2024-Q4 2025): Facebook 0.90% · X 0.86% · Instagram 0.68% · LinkedIn 0.52% (Focus Digital, 2026 CTR benchmarks)

What is CTR on social media?

CTR measures how often the people who saw something actually clicked on it, which makes it a proxy for how compelling a headline, image, or ad creative is at the moment someone scrolls past it. A high CTR means the content or ad is earning attention relative to its reach; a low CTR with high impressions usually signals the creative isn't resonating, even if the underlying offer is strong. CTR is a top-of-funnel signal, it says nothing about what happens after the click, which is why it's usually read alongside conversion rate rather than on its own; a high-CTR ad that converts poorly usually points to a mismatch between what the ad promises and what the landing page delivers.

How is CTR calculated?

CTR is clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100 to express it as a percentage: a post or ad seen 10,000 times that receives 90 clicks has a 0.9% CTR. A second example at a different scale: an ad shown 500,000 times that receives 3,000 clicks also lands at 0.6% CTR, the ratio matters, not the raw numbers, which is why CTR lets a small campaign and a large one be compared fairly.

Rates vary significantly by platform because of differences in ad inventory, audience targeting precision, and competition for placements. Based on data spanning Q4 2024 to Q4 2025 across 25 industries, average paid CTR was 0.90% on Facebook, 0.86% on X (Promoted Posts), 0.68% on Instagram (Feed & Stories), and 0.52% on LinkedIn (Sponsored Content) (Focus Digital, 2026 CTR benchmarks). Mobile CTR consistently outperforms desktop CTR across all four platforms in the same dataset, in some cases by more than 50%, which is one reason mobile-first ad creative (vertical formats, large legible text) tends to outperform creative designed primarily for desktop.

CTR also indirectly affects ad cost on platforms that use an auction based on predicted engagement: Meta's ad delivery system, for example, factors an estimated action rate into how an ad competes for placement, so creative a specific person is more likely to click can end up costing less per result than equally-targeted creative they're less likely to click, similar in spirit to a quality-score mechanic.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a good CTR on social media? It depends on the platform and industry, but based on 2026 benchmark data, anything above roughly 0.9% on Facebook or 0.86% on X is performing above the paid-ad average; LinkedIn's average sits lower, around 0.52%, reflecting its narrower, higher-intent B2B audience.

Is a higher CTR always better? Not automatically. A high CTR paired with a low conversion rate can mean the ad is misleading about what it delivers, similar to clickbait, which pulls in clicks that don't convert and can waste ad spend.

What's the difference between CTR and engagement rate? CTR only counts clicks relative to impressions. Engagement rate is broader and typically includes likes, comments, shares, and saves relative to reach or followers, capturing interaction that doesn't necessarily involve a click.

Does CTR affect how much an ad costs? On some platforms, yes. Ad auctions that factor in predicted engagement, like Meta's, can reward creative with a higher estimated click or action rate with a lower cost per result, since the platform is more confident the ad will perform well for that specific audience.
