Carousel post

A carousel post is a single social media post that contains multiple images, videos, or slides, which viewers swipe or click through one at a time, instead of seeing just one piece of media.

Quick facts

  • Also known as: carousel, swipe post, slideshow post, multi-image post, document post (LinkedIn)
  • Category: Content types
  • Applies to: Instagram · TikTok · Threads · LinkedIn · Facebook · Pinterest
  • Slide limits: Instagram up to 20, Threads up to 20, TikTok photo carousels up to 35 images
  • Key trait: each extra swipe is another chance to hold attention inside one post

What is a carousel post?

Instead of publishing ten separate photos, a carousel packs them into one post with small dots or arrows showing there is more to see. Viewers swipe left to move through the slides. Carousels are used for step-by-step tutorials, before-and-after comparisons, product collections, event recaps, mini guides, and "10 tips" style educational content.

Carousels first became common as an ad format, where advertisers could show several products in one ad unit. Instagram brought them to organic posts in 2017 with a 10-image limit, which later rose to 20. Other platforms followed with their own versions, and "carousel design" is now a specialty skill for creators, especially on Instagram and LinkedIn. For the paid side, see carousel ads vs. single image ads.

Instagram: up to 20 photos or videos in one carousel post. If a viewer scrolls past without swiping, Instagram may show the post again later starting from a different slide, which gives carousels extra chances to be seen. Read how to create carousel posts on Instagram.

Threads: up to 20 photos or videos in a single post.

TikTok: photo carousels (photo mode) support up to 35 images with music, usually displayed in a vertical 9:16 format.

LinkedIn: carousels are typically shared as PDF document posts, where each page becomes a swipeable slide, or as multi-image posts. See how to post a carousel on LinkedIn and best LinkedIn carousel post ideas and examples.

Facebook: multi-photo posts organically, and carousel ads with separate links per card.

Carousels increase time spent on a post, and every swipe is an engagement signal. They also let you tell a story or teach something in a structured way that a single image can't. Educational carousels tend to earn saves and shares, which are some of the strongest signals on Instagram and LinkedIn.

With the Circleboom Publish tool, you can create, design, and schedule Instagram carousel posts from a desktop dashboard. You can design slides with Canva templates, Unsplash, and Giphy, or upload your own media, rearrange the slide order in preview, and then publish right away, schedule for a specific date and time, or add the post to a queue.

For LinkedIn, the LinkedIn carousel generator lets you turn uploaded images into a carousel post for LinkedIn profiles and company pages. And with the AI Carousel Generator, you can enter a topic, choose the language, tone, target audience, and number of slides, and get a complete multi-slide carousel that you can edit slide by slide before publishing or scheduling. Frequently asked questions

How many slides should a carousel have? Use as many as the content needs, but most effective carousels stay between 5 and 10 slides. Put the strongest hook on the first slide and a clear call to action on the last.

Can I mix photos and videos in a carousel? Yes, on Instagram and Threads you can combine photos and videos in the same carousel.

Do carousels get more engagement than single images? They often do, because swipes, saves, and longer viewing time give the algorithm more positive signals, but results depend on the quality of the content.
